I am interested in a holistic approach to design solutions. This comes through an understanding of both spatial and product design, and how one affects the other. Having grown up in South Africa, followed by living and working in various European countries, I tend to look to these different cultural experiences for design inspiration.
Scandinavian design places a large emphasis on natural materials, such as wood and wool. But I am equally interested in experimenting with new and composite materials that may yield surprising results. An example of this can be seen in my Nemo lamp collection, where the use of heat-formed PET (recycled plastic bottles) felt allowed for a freestanding structure that would not be possible with conventional wool felt.
I am inspired by the elegant simplicity of Danish and Norwegian design, and the colour and boldness expressed by many African and Mediterranean designers.
